Kerala Class 8 and 9 Minimum Marks Rule (30%) — What Parents Should Know

Kerala has moved away from the old “all pass” approach in high school classes. In Classes 8 and 9, students now need a minimum score in the written (theory) part of the annual exam in each subject, and those who fall short get extra support and a second chance.

This guide explains the rule, what happens if a child scores below it, where the SSLC stands, and how parents can help. Always follow your school’s instructions and the General Education Department’s orders.

What the rule says

  • In each subject, students need at least 30% of the marks in the written exam of the annual exam. Continuous evaluation (CE) marks are counted separately and cannot make up for a very low written score.
  • The rule was introduced in Class 8 from 2024-25 and extended to Class 9 from 2025-26.
  • The aim is to make sure every student reaches a minimum level of learning before moving towards the SSLC.

If a child scores below 30%

  • Students who score below 30% in a subject are not simply failed. They get special training (remedial classes) during the vacation and then another chance to write the exam in that subject.
  • The school informs parents and gives the timetable for the extra classes and the re-exam.
  • Use the vacation classes seriously: they focus on exactly the basics the child missed.

What about the SSLC (Class 10)?

  • A similar minimum for the SSLC written exam was planned, but in September 2026 the Kerala government put it on hold for this academic year. So SSLC 2027 results follow the existing system, where CE and written marks are added together.
  • The rule for Classes 8 and 9 continues.
  • Even without the SSLC minimum, written marks matter for grades and Full A+, so strong basics from Classes 8 and 9 still pay off.

How parents can help

  • Look at the written marks in the Onam and Christmas exams, not just the total. A low written score in any subject is an early warning.
  • Ask the teacher which chapters or skills are weak, and plan short daily practice on them.
  • In Maths and Science, regular problem practice matters most; in languages and Social Science, writing answers under time.
  • If extra help is needed, choose support that follows the SCERT textbook and checks progress with tests.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the minimum marks rule for Class 8 and 9 in Kerala?

Students need at least 30% of the marks in the written (theory) part of the annual exam in each subject. The rule started in Class 8 in 2024-25 and in Class 9 in 2025-26.

What happens if my child gets less than 30% in Class 8 or 9?

The child is not simply failed. Students who score below 30% get special training during the vacation and another chance to write the exam in that subject. The school will share the timetable.

Is there a minimum mark for the SSLC exam in 2027?

No. In September 2026 the Kerala government put the planned SSLC written-exam minimum on hold for this academic year, so SSLC 2027 follows the existing system where CE and written marks are added. The rule continues for Classes 8 and 9.

Has the all pass system ended in Kerala?

For Classes 8 and 9, yes in practice: students must reach 30% in the written exam of each subject, with remedial classes and a second chance for those who do not. Check your school’s circular for the details in your year.
