Kerala Syllabus or CBSE? A Simple Guide for Parents

Many parents in Kerala and the Gulf ask which board is better — Kerala State syllabus or CBSE. There is no single right answer. The best choice depends on your child, your plans and the schools near you.

Who runs each board

Kerala State syllabus: textbooks are prepared by SCERT Kerala, and the Class 10 public exam is the SSLC, conducted by Kerala Pareeksha Bhavan.
CBSE: a national board; schools mostly use NCERT textbooks, and students write the CBSE Class 10 and Class 12 board exams.

Things to think about

Moving: families who may move between states or countries often prefer a board that is available wherever they go.
Language: both boards teach Malayalam in Kerala schools; check how much Malayalam the school offers if this matters to you.
Scholarship exams: LSS and USS (CM Kids LP/UP) are for Kerala State syllabus students.
The school itself: teachers, class size and distance often matter more than the board.

Questions to ask a school

How are students supported when they find a subject difficult?
How much homework is given, and how are parents kept informed?
What activities are offered beyond the classroom?

Changing boards

Children can move between boards, but some topics may be taught in a different order.
A few weeks of extra support in Maths and Science usually helps them catch up.
