SSLC Physics, Chemistry and Biology — How to Prepare and Score A+
In the Kerala SSLC exam, Physics, Chemistry and Biology are three separate papers. They are shorter than Maths or Social Science, but together they decide three of your ten grades, so they are a big part of getting Full A+.
This guide explains how the science papers are set and how to prepare for each one, with answer-writing habits that save marks.
How the science papers are set
- Each paper has 40 marks for the written exam, with 1½ hours to write plus 15 minutes of cool-off time to read the paper first. Another 10 marks come from continuous evaluation (CE) in school, so each subject is out of 50.
- Questions range from one-word and multiple-choice to short answers and longer answers with diagrams, equations or calculations. Recent papers were in sections with some choice of questions.
- For an A+ you need 90% or more of the total. Read the instructions in the cool-off time and plan which questions you will answer.
Physics
- Make a formula sheet for each chapter, with the unit of every quantity. Many marks are lost on missing or wrong units.
- Practise numericals every day: write the formula, put in the values, then the answer with the unit. Show each step; steps earn marks even if the final answer slips.
- Draw ray diagrams and circuit diagrams with a pencil and ruler, with arrows and labels. Practise them until you can draw them quickly.
- For “why” questions, link your answer to the law or principle from the textbook in one clear sentence.
Chemistry
- Learn the key equations and practise balancing them. Write state symbols and conditions where the textbook shows them.
- Know the periodic table patterns: how properties change across a period and down a group. Many questions are built on them.
- Practise calculations step by step, and naming of carbon compounds if your textbook covers them, until the rules feel automatic.
- Learn the experiments in the textbook: what is done, what is observed and why. These often appear as questions.
Biology
- Diagrams carry marks: practise the labelled diagrams from the textbook until you can draw and label them from memory.
- Use flowcharts for processes (how something happens step by step). They are quicker to write and easier to mark.
- Use the textbook’s exact terms. Biology answers are marked on key words, so learn the spelling of technical terms.
- For longer answers, write in short points, each with one idea, instead of long paragraphs.
Answer-writing habits for all three papers
- Use the cool-off time to read every question and mark the ones you will choose.
- Match the length of your answer to the marks: one point per mark is a good guide.
- Underline key words, draw neat diagrams, and leave a line between answers.
- Do not leave any question you must answer blank; write what you know, because partial answers earn partial marks.
A revision plan until March
- Now to December: finish the chapters with your school, and make formula, equation and diagram sheets as you go.
- Christmas exam: use it as a practice run. Note every mistake in an error notebook.
- January–February: revise each chapter, then solve previous SSLC question papers and the model exam under time.
- The last weeks: go through your sheets and error notebook every day instead of starting new books.
Frequently Asked Questions
How many marks is the SSLC Physics exam?
Physics, Chemistry and Biology each have a 40-mark written exam of 1½ hours plus 15 minutes of cool-off time. Another 10 marks come from continuous evaluation (CE) in school, so each subject is out of 50.
How can I score A+ in SSLC Physics?
Learn every formula with its unit, practise numericals daily with every step shown, draw ray and circuit diagrams neatly with labels, and solve previous papers under time. You need 90% or more of the total for an A+.
How do I study SSLC Biology?
Read the textbook carefully, learn the exact technical terms, practise the labelled diagrams until you can draw them from memory, and use flowcharts for processes. Write longer answers as short points.
What is the best way to prepare for SSLC Chemistry?
Learn and practise balancing the key equations, understand the periodic table patterns, practise calculations step by step, and learn the experiments in the textbook. Solve previous question papers under time before the exam.
