CBSE Class 12 Board Exam 2027 — Pattern, Official Dates and a Study Plan
CBSE Class 12 marks matter for college admissions and, in many courses, for entrance-based admissions too. The good news is that the board exam follows the NCERT textbooks and the CBSE sample papers closely, so steady, well-planned preparation works.
This guide explains the paper pattern, the official 2027 dates, the pass rules and a month-by-month plan. CBSE released the 2027 date sheet on 6 November 2026: the exams start on 16 February 2027.
When to expect the 2027 exams
- In 2026 the CBSE board exams began on 17 February 2026, and the Class 12 papers ran into early April.
- For 2027, the theory exams start on 16 February 2027 (Physics) and end on 9 April, with every paper at 10:30 am IST, according to CBSE’s official date sheet of 6 November 2026. See our CBSE date sheet 2027 guide for the main subject dates. Practical exams, projects and internal assessment are scheduled from 1 January 2027 for schools in India and abroad (winter-bound schools: 9 November to 19 December 2026), according to CBSE’s circular of 5 November 2026.
- The two board exams a year system introduced in 2026 is for Class 10 only. Class 12 has one main board exam, with a supplementary exam for students who need it.
How the papers are set
- Most theory papers are 3 hours long. Recent papers had about half the marks from competency-based questions (case studies, source-based and application questions), with the rest from multiple-choice and short and long answer questions.
- Marks are split between theory and practical or internal assessment. For example, Mathematics has an 80-mark theory paper with 20 internal marks, and Physics has a 70-mark theory paper with a 30-mark practical.
- To pass, you need at least 33% in the theory paper and in the practical/internal part separately, wherever both apply.
- The official syllabus, marking scheme and sample question papers for each subject are on cbseacademic.nic.in.
Preparing for competency-based questions
- Read the NCERT textbook line by line; case-study passages are built on its concepts and examples.
- Practise application questions: after each chapter, ask yourself how the idea would apply to a real situation, a graph or a data table.
- Solve the CBSE sample papers and their marking schemes; they show exactly how answers are marked.
A study plan until the board exam
- November–December: finish the syllabus with your school, then start a first revision. Note weak chapters.
- December–January: pre-board exams and practicals. Treat the pre-board as a full rehearsal and fix every mistake.
- January–February: one sample paper per subject every few days under time, and short daily revision of formulas, diagrams and key terms.
- Between papers: CBSE leaves gaps between many papers; use them for final revision of that subject only.
For students in the Gulf and Kerala
- CBSE exams are held on the same schedule in India and abroad, so Gulf students follow the same date sheet. Check your exam centre and timings with your school.
- If you are also preparing for entrance exams such as NEET, JEE, KEAM or CUET, study each chapter for the board first, then practise entrance-style questions on it.
