CBSE Class 9 New Curriculum 2026-27 — Third Language, Advanced Maths and Science Explained
CBSE has started a new curriculum for students entering Class 9 in 2026-27. The changes reach the board exam in 2028, when this batch writes Class 10, so parents of Class 9 children need to understand them now.
This guide summarises the main changes as reported in April 2026. CBSE has said the framework will be refined, so follow your school’s circulars and cbseacademic.nic.in.
Two levels of Maths and Science
- Every student writes the standard Maths and Science papers (80 marks, 3 hours).
- Students who want a greater challenge can also take an optional advanced paper: an extra one-hour, 25-mark exam testing higher-order and analytical skills. CBSE has published a separate “Mathematics at Advanced Level (Optional)” curriculum.
- From the 2028 board exams, students can take up to two advanced papers. The advanced score is shown separately on the mark sheet (when it is 50% or more) and is not added to the aggregate.
- The option is open to all students; there is no selection test.
The third language (R3)
- CBSE is moving to a three-language formula (R1, R2, R3), with at least two Indian languages. It starts in Class 6 in 2026-27 and is extended to higher classes step by step.
- For the Class 9 batch, the change begins with revised textbooks for the first two languages; from the 2028 board exams, appearing in at least two languages becomes compulsory.
- Students returning from schools abroad may be exempted from the third language if it is not available to them, which matters for Gulf families moving back.
Other changes
- A new internally assessed subject, Individuals in Society, is introduced in Class 9.
- Art, physical education and well-being stay school-based and internally assessed; vocational education is being strengthened.
- Computational thinking and AI are being brought into the curriculum in stages; check the circular for your child’s class and year.
- CBSE has said there are no changes to the 2027 board exams; the first big shift is in 2028.
What parents should do
- Ask the school which languages it offers for R1, R2 and R3, and choose early.
- Decide on the advanced Maths or Science option based on your child’s interest and future plans; it does not change the aggregate, but it can show strength in a subject.
- If you may move back to Kerala or between boards, check how these choices affect admission; see our moving back to Kerala guide and Maths Standard vs Basic guide.
