Moving Back to Kerala from the Gulf — A School Admission Guide for Parents

Many Malayali families return to Kerala from the UAE, Saudi Arabia, Qatar, Oman, Kuwait or Bahrain, and the children’s school admission is often the biggest worry. The process is simpler when you know which route applies to your child and carry the right documents.

This guide explains the main routes, the documents, the timing and how to help your child settle in. Rules can change and schools may ask for more, so always confirm with the new school and the local education office.

Step 1: decide the board in Kerala

  • Most Gulf Indian schools follow CBSE, and some follow the Kerala syllabus. In Kerala you can choose a CBSE school or a Kerala state syllabus school (government, aided or unaided).
  • Staying in the same board is usually the smoothest, especially in Classes 9 to 12. Switching boards is common in lower classes, but plan extra support for the change (see Step 4).

Step 2: the admission routes

  • CBSE school in the Gulf → CBSE school in Kerala: admission is with the transfer certificate (TC) from the Gulf school. CBSE has told schools that TCs between CBSE-affiliated schools do not need countersignature.
  • Kerala syllabus school in the Gulf → Kerala school: these schools follow the same syllabus and exams, so the move is a normal transfer with the TC.
  • Other boards or foreign schools → Kerala state school: under the Kerala Education Rules, pupils from outside India are admitted with a TC or equivalent document countersigned by the Inspecting Officer (the local education officer), to the class they are eligible for.
  • Board classes (10 and 12): moving in the middle of a board-exam year is limited and needs the board’s and school’s approval, so try to move before Class 9 or 11, or at the end of a school year. Ask the school and the board’s regional office early.

Step 3: documents to carry

  • Transfer certificate from the Gulf school, and the latest report cards / progress reports.
  • Birth certificate, the child’s and parents’ passport copies, and photos.
  • Any document the new school asks for, such as an equivalence certificate for a foreign board, or attested copies of foreign documents. Ask the school for its list before you travel, because getting documents from the Gulf after you leave is harder.

Step 4: timing and settling in

  • School years do not line up perfectly: many Gulf Indian schools start in April, while Kerala state schools start in June. Moving between April and June usually causes the least disruption.
  • Malayalam is a big change for many Gulf-raised children in Kerala syllabus schools. Starting reading and writing practice a few months before the move helps a lot.
  • Expect a short adjustment period: new textbooks, a different exam pattern and a new routine. Weekly check-ins with the class teacher help you catch gaps early.
