Malayalam Mission Courses for NRI Children — Kanikonna to Neelakurinji Explained

Malayalam Mission is the Kerala government’s programme for teaching Malayalam to the children of Malayali families living outside Kerala, in the Gulf and around the world. Classes are run by local Malayali associations that work as Malayalam Mission centres or chapters.

This guide explains the four courses, how long they take and how to find a class, so you can plan your child’s Malayalam learning alongside school.

The four courses, in order

  • Kanikonna: the first certificate course, usually about 2 years. Children start reading and writing the Malayalam letters and simple words.
  • Sooryakanthi: the diploma course, about 2 years.
  • Ambal: the higher diploma course, about 3 years.
  • Neelakurinji: the senior higher diploma course, about 3 years, the last level.
  • Each level builds on the previous one, so children usually join at Kanikonna and move up. Some centres place older children by a short test.

How to find a class

  • Contact the Malayalam Mission chapter or the main Malayali association in your city. In the UAE, a Malayalam Mission chapter was opened at the Indian Consulate in Dubai.
  • Classes are usually held at weekends, in person or online, and are often taught by volunteer teachers. Fees and timings differ from centre to centre, so ask the local centre.
  • Ask whether the centre is a recognised Malayalam Mission centre, so that your child can sit the course exams and get the certificates.

Tips for parents

  • Speak Malayalam at home every day, even for a few minutes. Children learn fastest when they hear the language in daily life.
  • Read short Malayalam stories together, and let your child write a few words or a short note each week.
  • If there is no centre near you, or the class timings do not suit you, online lessons with a Malayalam teacher can fill the gap.

Online Malayalam classes with WonderZ

  • WonderZ Learning runs online Spoken and Written Malayalam classes for NRI children at Gulf-friendly timings, 1-on-1 or in small groups, with Kerala teachers.
  • These are WonderZ’s own classes (WonderZ is not a Malayalam Mission centre). Many families use them alongside a Malayalam Mission class, or where there is no centre nearby.
