Plus Two Maths — How to Prepare and Score A+ in the Kerala HSE Exam

Plus Two Mathematics is one of the most important papers for Science and Commerce students with Maths: it counts for your grade, for KEAM rank and for many degree admissions. It is also the paper where daily practice makes the biggest difference.

This guide explains how the paper is set, how to study each part of the syllabus and how to avoid losing easy marks in the exam.

How the Maths paper is set

  • Mathematics has no practical exam, so the written paper has 80 marks and 20 marks come from continuous evaluation (CE) in school.
  • You get 2½ hours to write plus 15 minutes of cool-off time to read the paper and plan. In 2026 the Maths paper was on 17 March, from 1:30 pm to 4:15 pm.
  • Questions range from short one-step questions to long problems, usually with some choice. Kerala uses the NCERT Mathematics textbooks for Plus Two, so the exercises and examples there are your main practice material.

Calculus: the biggest part

  • Calculus (continuity and differentiability, derivatives and their applications, integrals and their applications, and differential equations) carries a large share of the marks.
  • Make a formula sheet of standard derivatives and integrals and revise it daily until you know it without looking.
  • Practise integration methods (substitution, partial fractions, by parts) on many problems; recognising which method to use comes only with practice.
  • For application problems (maxima and minima, area under curves), draw a rough sketch first.

Algebra, vectors and 3D geometry

  • Matrices and determinants: practise operations carefully; most mistakes are sign errors. Check answers where you can (for example, by multiplying back).
  • Relations, functions and inverse trigonometric functions: learn the definitions and the principal value ranges.
  • Vectors and three-dimensional geometry: learn the standard forms of lines and planes and the formulas for angles and distances; practise problems that combine them.

Linear programming and probability

  • Linear programming: draw the graph neatly, shade the feasible region, list the corner points and check each one. These are steady scoring questions.
  • Probability: write down the events clearly before calculating, and practise conditional probability and Bayes’ theorem questions from the textbook.

Exam tips that save marks

  • Use the cool-off time to pick the questions you are sure of and plan the order.
  • Show every step. Steps earn marks even if the final answer goes wrong.
  • Do not spend too long on one problem; move on and come back if time allows.
  • Keep the last 10 minutes to check signs, units and copied numbers.

A revision plan until March

  • Now to December: finish the textbook exercises chapter by chapter, and keep a list of problems you got wrong.
  • Christmas exam: use it as practice; redo every mistake.
  • January–February: revise one area at a time (calculus, algebra, vectors and 3D, LPP and probability), then solve previous Plus Two papers and the model exam under time.
  • The last weeks: formula sheet daily, one timed paper every few days, and your wrong-problem list.

Frequently Asked Questions

How many marks is the Plus Two Maths exam in Kerala?

The written exam has 80 marks, with 2½ hours to write plus 15 minutes of cool-off time. Mathematics has no practical exam, so the other 20 marks come from continuous evaluation (CE) in school.

Which chapters are most important in Plus Two Maths?

Calculus (derivatives, integrals and their applications, differential equations) carries a large share of the marks, so give it the most time. But cover every chapter, including matrices, vectors, 3D geometry, linear programming and probability, because questions come from all of them.

How can I score A+ in Plus Two Maths?

Solve every NCERT exercise and example, learn the standard formulas until you know them by heart, practise integration methods on many problems, show every step in the exam and solve previous papers under time. You need 90% or more of the total for an A+.

Does Plus Two Maths matter for KEAM?

Yes. For engineering, your Plus Two Physics, Chemistry and Mathematics marks are used together with your KEAM score to prepare the rank list, so a strong Maths mark helps your rank.
