Science, Commerce or Humanities? Choosing Your Plus One Stream After SSLC in Kerala
After SSLC, every Kerala student going on to higher secondary chooses a stream (Science, Commerce or Humanities) and, inside it, a subject combination. The choice shapes which degree and entrance exams are open to you after Plus Two, so it is worth thinking about before the HSCAP application opens.
This guide explains what each stream contains, the common combinations and where they lead, with simple questions to help you decide.
How Plus One subjects are organised
- Every student studies English, a second language (such as Malayalam, Hindi or Arabic) and four subjects from one combination.
- The combinations are grouped into Science, Commerce and Humanities. There are about 45 in all; the full list with course codes is in each year’s HSCAP prospectus.
- Not every school offers every combination, so check the school list on hscap.kerala.gov.in before you fill in your options.
Science
- Every Science combination has Physics and Chemistry, plus two more subjects. The most common are Biology + Mathematics (often called “Bio-Maths”), Mathematics + Computer Science and Biology + Home Science. Others include Geology, Electronics, Statistics and Psychology.
- With Mathematics you can aim for engineering through KEAM or JEE. With Biology you can aim for medical courses through NEET. Biology + Mathematics keeps both routes open, but it is also the heaviest load.
- Science suits students who enjoy problem solving and are ready for steady daily practice, especially in Mathematics and Physics.
Commerce
- Every Commerce combination has Business Studies, Accountancy and Economics, plus one of Mathematics, Computer Applications, Statistics or Political Science.
- It leads to B.Com, BBA and similar degrees, and to professional courses such as CA, CMA and CS. Choose Mathematics as the fourth subject if you may want economics, statistics or data-related courses later.
- Commerce suits students who like numbers, business and how money works.
Humanities
- Humanities has the widest choice: most combinations are built around History, Economics and Political Science with a fourth subject such as Geography, Sociology, Psychology or a language. Others include Journalism, Communicative English, Social Work, Gandhian Studies and Computer Applications.
- It leads to BA degrees in subjects like English, History, Economics, Psychology and Journalism, and to fields such as law, teaching, media and social work.
- Humanities suits students who enjoy reading, writing and discussing ideas. It is a strong choice, not a fallback.
Questions to ask before you choose
- Which subjects do I enjoy and do well in? Look at your Class 9 and 10 marks honestly.
- What might I want to study after Plus Two? If you are unsure, choose the combination that keeps more routes open.
- Can I handle the load? Bio-Maths means two heavy subjects plus entrance preparation. Talk to students already in Plus One.
- Is it available near me? List several schools offering the combination you want.
- Some routes, such as law entrance (CLAT) and civil services, are open to students from any stream, so you do not need Science to keep those options.
Filling in your HSCAP options
- In the single-window application you can list up to 50 options (school + combination), in order of preference. Put the combination and school you want most at the top.
- CBSE students who want a combination with Mathematics should check that they took Mathematics Standard in Class 10.
- After the main allotments, merit-quota students can usually apply for a school or combination transfer. See our Plus One admission (HSCAP) guide for the steps.
Frequently Asked Questions
Which group should I choose after SSLC?
Choose the stream that matches the subjects you enjoy and what you may want to study after Plus Two. Science (with Mathematics or Biology) keeps engineering and medical routes open, Commerce leads to B.Com, CA and business courses, and Humanities leads to BA degrees, law, media and teaching.
What subjects are in Plus One Science in Kerala?
Every Science combination has Physics and Chemistry, plus two more subjects. Common choices are Biology and Mathematics, Mathematics and Computer Science, and Biology and Home Science. All students also study English and a second language.
Is Bio-Maths better than Computer Science?
Neither is better for everyone. Biology and Mathematics keeps both medical (NEET) and engineering (KEAM, JEE) routes open but is a heavier load. Mathematics and Computer Science suits students who are sure about engineering or computing and do not need Biology.
How many subject combinations are there in Plus One in Kerala?
There are about 45 combinations across Science, Commerce and Humanities. The full list with course codes is in the HSCAP prospectus each year, and not every school offers every combination.
Can I change my combination after admission?
Usually, yes. After the main allotments, students admitted in the merit quota can apply for a school or combination transfer through the HSCAP portal, subject to seat availability. Check the circular on hscap.kerala.gov.in for that year’s dates.
