SSLC English — How to Write Discourses, Answer Questions and Score A+

The SSLC English paper rewards students who can write clearly in the forms the textbook teaches, such as diary entries, letters, profiles and speeches. You do not need difficult words: a simple, well-organised answer in the right format scores well.

This guide explains how the paper is set and how to prepare each type of question, with model outlines you can practise.

How the English paper is set

  • The written exam has 80 marks with 2½ hours to write, plus 15 minutes of cool-off time at the start. Another 20 marks come from continuous evaluation (CE) in school, so the subject is out of 100.
  • Questions come from the textbook lessons and poems, plus reading passages, grammar and editing, and writing tasks (the “discourses”) such as a diary, notice, letter, profile, report, speech, character sketch or narrative.
  • Many questions offer a choice (“answer any two”), so use the cool-off time to pick the ones you can do best.

Writing tasks (discourses): learn the format

  • Diary entry: date at the top, written in the first person (“I”), about the character’s feelings and thoughts on the day’s events.
  • Letter: address and date, greeting, a clear purpose in the first lines, the details, and a proper closing.
  • Profile: a short, factual piece about a person: name, background, achievements and why they matter, in the third person.
  • Speech or report: greeting the audience (speech) or a headline and place and date (report), then the main points in order, and a clear ending.
  • Character sketch: the character’s qualities, each supported by an example from the lesson.
  • For every task, include the points given in the question; examiners check for them.

Textbook questions

  • Read every lesson and poem at least twice and make short notes on the story, characters and main message.
  • For poems, know the theme, the poet’s idea and key images, and practise short appreciation answers.
  • Answer in your own words, but use names, places and events from the lesson so the answer is clearly about the text.

Grammar and editing

  • Practise the grammar points in your textbook regularly: tenses, reported speech, passive voice, question tags, prepositions and linkers are common.
  • For editing questions, read the whole passage first, then correct one word at a time.
  • Ten minutes of grammar practice a day works better than long sessions just before the exam.

A revision plan until March

  • Now to December: write one discourse a week (diary, letter, profile, speech, report in turn) and ask your teacher to check it.
  • Christmas exam: use it as practice and note which question types cost you marks.
  • January–February: revise lesson notes, keep daily grammar practice, and solve previous SSLC papers and the model exam under time.
  • The last weeks: go through your format notes and corrected writing every day.
