SSLC Social Science — How to Prepare, Write Answers and Score A+

Social Science is one of the biggest SSLC papers, and many students find it the hardest to score in, not because it is difficult but because there is so much to remember and write. With the right method, it can be one of your easiest A+ grades.

This guide explains how the paper is set, how to learn each part of the subject and how to write answers that collect full marks.

How the Social Science paper is set

  • The written exam has 80 marks with 2½ hours to write plus 15 minutes of cool-off time. Another 20 marks come from continuous evaluation (CE) in school, so the subject is out of 100.
  • The paper has multiple-choice and one-word questions, short answers and longer answers, and questions come from both Social Science textbooks.
  • For an A+ you need 90% or more of the total, so you cannot skip whole chapters. Plan to cover every chapter at least once.

History and Political Science: learn it as a story

  • Read each chapter as a story of causes → events → results. When you know why something happened, the facts are easier to remember.
  • Make a one-page timeline for each History chapter with the key years, people and events. Revise these pages again and again.
  • For Political Science and Sociology, learn the key terms with a one-line meaning and an example.

Geography: maps, diagrams and processes

  • Practise marking places on an outline map of India (rivers, mountains, regions and places from your textbook) so you can do it quickly and neatly.
  • Learn processes such as winds, rainfall and seasons with a simple diagram or flowchart.
  • Know the meaning of each term and be ready to give a reason (“why”) for each pattern.

Economics: understand the terms

  • Economics questions test whether you understand the concepts, not just the definitions. Explain each term to yourself in simple words with an everyday example.
  • Make a list of terms that are easily confused and write the difference between each pair.

Answer-writing tips

  • Use the cool-off time to choose your questions and plan the long answers.
  • Match the length to the marks: one clear point per mark is a good guide. Write long answers in points with a short heading where it helps.
  • Use the key words from the textbook; examiners look for them.
  • Watch the clock: Social Science answers are long, so leave time for every question. Practise full papers under time before the exam.

A revision plan until March

  • Now to December: make timelines, term lists and map practice sheets as you finish each chapter.
  • Christmas exam: use it as a full-length practice and note where you lost time or marks.
  • January–February: revise one chapter a day, then solve previous SSLC papers and the model exam under time.
  • The last weeks: go through your one-page notes and maps every day.
