SSLC Malayalam and Hindi — How to Write Answers and Score A+
Malayalam (first language, two papers) and Hindi make up three of the ten SSLC grades, and they are among the easiest papers in which to secure A+ if you practise writing. Marks come from understanding the lessons and writing in the forms the textbook teaches.
This guide explains how the language papers are set and how to prepare for each type of question.
How the language papers are set
- The first language has two papers (Part I and Part II). Each has a 40-mark written exam with 1½ hours to write plus 15 minutes of cool-off time, and another 10 marks from continuous evaluation (CE). Each paper is graded separately.
- Hindi also has a 40-mark written paper with 10 CE marks.
- Students who take another first language (such as Arabic, Sanskrit or Urdu) follow their own papers; the writing tips below still apply.
- For an A+ you need 90% or more of the total in each subject.
Malayalam: understanding the lessons
- Read every lesson and poem carefully and note the theme, the writer’s idea and the important lines.
- For poems, learn to explain the meaning and the beauty of key lines (images, sound and feeling) in your own words.
- Know the main characters and events of each prose lesson so you can write about them with examples.
Malayalam: writing tasks
- Common tasks include an appreciation note on a poem or passage, a character study, an essay or opinion piece, and short answers on the lessons.
- Plan each long answer: an opening line that answers the question, two or three points with examples from the lesson, and a short conclusion.
- Write in clear, simple Malayalam with correct spelling; neat, well-organised answers score better than long ones.
Hindi
- Learn the lessons and poems with short notes on the theme and characters.
- Practise the writing forms taught in the textbook, such as a letter, diary entry, conversation, report or poster, with the right format for each.
- Revise the grammar points in your textbook regularly, and practise writing short sentences correctly.
- If Hindi is hard for you, learn a set of useful phrases for each writing form; they make answers easier to start and finish.
A revision plan until March
- Now to December: one writing task a week in Malayalam and in Hindi, checked by your teacher.
- Christmas exam: note which question types cost you marks.
- January–February: revise lesson notes and solve previous SSLC papers and the model exam under time.
- The last weeks: go through your notes, formats and corrected answers every day.
