Courses After Plus Two Commerce — CA, CMA, CS, B.Com and More
Plus Two Commerce opens two kinds of routes: professional courses such as CA, CMA and CS, run by national institutes with their own exams, and degree courses such as B.Com and BBA at colleges and universities. Many students do both together.
This guide explains how each route starts and what you can do during Plus Two to be ready. Rules and dates change, so always confirm on the official websites before registering.
Chartered Accountancy (CA)
- Run by the Institute of Chartered Accountants of India (ICAI). The route is Foundation → Intermediate → practical training (articleship) → Final.
- You can register provisionally after Class 10, but you can write the CA Foundation exam only after your Class 12 board exam.
- The Foundation exam is now held three times a year (generally January, May/June and September). Each sitting has a registration cut-off a few months earlier, so plan ahead on the ICAI website.
- Plus Two Accountancy is the base for CA, so strong Accountancy marks and habits help a lot.
Cost and Management Accountancy (CMA)
- Run by the Institute of Cost Accountants of India (ICMAI). The route is Foundation → Intermediate → Final, with practical training.
- You can register for CMA Foundation after appearing in Class 12. There are June and December exam terms; registration usually closes by 31 January (for June) and 31 July (for December).
Company Secretary (CS)
- Run by the Institute of Company Secretaries of India (ICSI). The first step is the CS Executive Entrance Test (CSEET).
- Under the restructured format, CSEET is held three times a year (in recent notices, the first week of February, June and October). Students who have passed or are appearing in Class 12 can register.
- CS focuses on company law, governance and compliance, so it suits students who like law and business together.
Degree courses
- B.Com, with specialisations such as Finance, Taxation, Computer Applications or Co-operation, is the most common choice. Many students do B.Com alongside CA, CMA or CS.
- BBA for business management, and degrees such as BA Economics, which suits students who took Mathematics in Plus Two.
- Admissions to Kerala colleges are based on Plus Two marks through each university’s allotment, and central universities use CUET-UG. Watch the university notices after your result.
- Commerce students can also take routes open to any stream, such as law (CLAT and other law entrances), hotel management or design.
What to do during Plus Two
- Score well in the board exam: degree admissions in Kerala depend on Plus Two marks.
- Build strong basics in Accountancy, Business Studies and Economics; they are the foundation of CA, CMA and CS.
- If you are aiming for CA, check the ICAI registration cut-off for the sitting after your board exam and register in time.
- Talk to people who are studying these courses to understand the workload before you choose.
