Kerala’s New SCERT Textbooks — Which Classes Changed and What It Means
Kerala’s school curriculum was revised for the first time in about a decade, and new SCERT textbooks were introduced in two phases. If your child’s class changed books, older notes, guides and question papers may not match the new syllabus.
This guide explains which classes changed and how to adjust your study plan. For downloads, see our SCERT textbooks guide.
The two phases
- Phase 1 (2024-25): new textbooks for Classes 1, 3, 5, 7 and 9, based on the Kerala Curriculum Framework (Kerala chose its own framework rather than the NEP framework).
- Phase 2 (2025-26): new textbooks for Classes 2, 4, 6, 8 and 10, with second volumes released during the year.
- So from 2025-26, every class from 1 to 10 has new textbooks, including the SSLC (Class 10) books.
What changed
- New content and activities in most subjects, with more emphasis on understanding and application.
- Some new topics were added; for example, a chapter on the duties of the Governor was approved for the Class 10 textbook.
- Kerala has also planned digital textbooks with online audio and video content.
- For Higher Secondary, revision of 80 SCERT titles began in 2025; reports say the Plus One textbooks were revised for 2026-27 and the Plus Two revision is under way. Check with your school which books your batch uses.
What this means for students
- Use the current textbook first. Old guides, notes and previous question papers from before the change may include topics that are no longer in the syllabus, or miss new ones.
- When using previous SSLC papers, check each question against your new textbook.
- Teachers’ handbooks and SCERT resources are being updated; follow your school’s notes.
- Model and term exams set by your school follow the new books, so they are the best practice material.
Where to get the books
- Printed books come through schools. PDF versions are published by SCERT and on the official textbook portals; see our SCERT textbooks download guide.
- For study tips by class, see our study guides.
