Plus Two Business Studies and Economics — How to Prepare and Score A+

Business Studies and Economics are two of the three core Commerce subjects (with Accountancy), and Economics is also taken by many Humanities students. Both are scoring subjects when you learn the concepts clearly and write answers in the way the examiners expect.

This guide explains how the papers are set and how to prepare each subject.

How the papers are set

  • Both subjects have no practical exam, so the written paper has 80 marks and 20 marks come from continuous evaluation (CE), including projects or assignments.
  • Questions range from objective and short answers to longer, essay-type answers, with cool-off time at the start to read and plan.
  • You need at least 30% in the written paper (24 of 80) as well as the minimum grade. Kerala uses the NCERT textbooks for both subjects.

Economics: microeconomics and macroeconomics

  • The paper covers microeconomics (consumers, producers, demand and supply, markets) and macroeconomics (national income, money and banking, government budget, balance of payments).
  • Diagrams carry marks: practise demand and supply curves, cost curves and equilibrium diagrams with correctly labelled axes.
  • Numericals: practise calculations such as national income, elasticity and multiplier step by step, writing the formula first.
  • Learn definitions word for word, then explain each concept in your own words with an everyday example.

Business Studies: management, finance and marketing

  • The textbook covers the principles and functions of management (planning, organising, staffing, directing, controlling) and business finance and marketing.
  • Learn each topic as a list of points with headings (for example, the features or importance of planning) and practise writing them quickly.
  • For case-based questions, identify the concept in the case first, name it, then quote the line that shows it.
  • Make a one-page chart for each chapter with its key terms and lists; revise these charts often.

Answer-writing tips

  • Write long answers as points with short headings, one point per mark, with a one-line explanation each.
  • Underline key terms, and add a diagram in Economics wherever it helps.
  • Watch the time: plan to finish with 10 minutes left to check.

A revision plan until March

  • Now to December: finish chapters with your school; build chapter charts (Business Studies) and diagram and formula sheets (Economics).
  • Christmas exam: use it as practice and note weak chapters.
  • January–February: revise one chapter a day and solve previous Plus Two papers and the model exam under time.
  • The last weeks: charts, diagrams and definitions every day.

Learn each topic as a list of points with headings, make a one-page chart for every chapter, practise case-based questions by first naming the concept, and write long answers as points with short explanations.
