Plus Two English — How to Prepare and Score A+ in the Kerala HSE Exam

English is the one subject every Plus Two student writes, whether in Science, Commerce or Humanities. It is also one of the easiest A+ grades to secure when you know the textbook well and practise the writing tasks.

This guide explains how the paper is set and how to prepare each type of question.

How the English paper is set

  • The written paper has 80 marks, and another 20 marks come from continuous evaluation (CE), so English is out of 100. In 2026 the English paper was on 28 March.
  • Questions range from very short answers to short and descriptive answers and extended writing tasks, many with a choice (for example, answer two out of three).
  • Cool-off time at the start lets you read every question and choose. You need at least 30% in the written paper (24 of 80) as well as the minimum grade.

Textbook questions

  • Read every prose lesson, story and poem at least twice. For each, note the theme, the main characters or speaker, key events and important lines.
  • For poems, practise short appreciation answers: the theme, the poet’s idea, and one or two images or devices, explained simply.
  • Answer in your own words, but use names, places and details from the text so the answer clearly belongs to it.

Extended writing tasks

  • Practise the writing forms your textbook teaches, such as a letter, report, profile, review, speech, article or essay, with the right format for each.
  • Plan each long answer in two minutes: an opening that answers the question, three or four main points with examples, and a short conclusion.
  • Include every point given in the question; examiners check for them.
  • Write one long task a week from now until the exam, and ask your teacher to correct it.

Grammar and language

  • Revise the grammar points in your textbook regularly: tenses, reported speech, passive voice, linkers, prepositions and sentence correction are common.
  • Ten minutes of grammar practice a day is enough if you keep it up.
  • Read a short English article or story every day to improve vocabulary and writing speed.

A revision plan until March

  • Now to December: lesson notes for every unit and one writing task a week.
  • Christmas exam: use it as practice and note which question types cost you marks.
  • January–February: revise lesson notes, keep daily grammar practice, and solve previous Plus Two papers and the model exam under time.
  • The last weeks: go through your notes, formats and corrected writing every day.
