Plus Two Physics and Chemistry — How to Prepare and Score A+
Physics and Chemistry decide two of your Plus Two grades and, for engineering, they also count towards your KEAM rank. They are also the papers where students most often lose marks to small mistakes: a missing unit, an unbalanced equation or a step left out.
This guide explains how the papers are set, how practicals count and how to prepare each subject for an A+.
How the papers are set
- Physics and Chemistry are subjects with practicals, so the written paper has 60 marks, and the other 40 marks come from the practical exam and continuous evaluation (CE) together.
- The written papers are shorter than the 2½-hour papers in subjects without practicals, and start with cool-off time to read the questions.
- Questions are in sections, from very short to long answers. Kerala uses the NCERT Physics and Chemistry textbooks for Plus Two, so the textbook examples, exercises and in-text questions are your main practice material.
- To pass you need at least 30% in the written paper alone (18 of 60) as well as the overall minimum, so do not rely on practical and CE marks to carry you.
Physics
- Derivations: list the derivations in each chapter and practise writing them in full, with a labelled diagram, until you can do them without the book.
- Numericals: write the formula, put in values with units and give the answer with its unit. Practise the textbook exercises chapter by chapter.
- Diagrams and graphs: ray diagrams, circuit diagrams and graphs should be neat, labelled and drawn with a ruler.
- For explanation questions, start with the law or principle in one clear sentence, then apply it.
Chemistry
- Physical chemistry: practise numerical problems step by step with units, and learn the key formulas on a single sheet.
- Inorganic chemistry: learn trends, important reactions and exceptions in tables; revise them often because they are memory-based.
- Organic chemistry: learn name reactions and conversions as chains (“A → B → C”), practise IUPAC naming and mechanisms from the textbook, and write equations with conditions.
Practicals and CE
- The practical exam and CE together carry 40 marks, so they are easy marks to secure. Keep your record book complete and neat.
- Learn the aim, principle, procedure and precautions of each experiment, and be ready for viva questions on them.
A revision plan until March
- Now to December: finish the chapters with your school, and make derivation lists, formula sheets and reaction charts as you go.
- Christmas exam: use it as practice and redo every mistake.
- January–February: practicals and model exams; revise chapter by chapter, then solve previous Plus Two papers under time.
- The last weeks: derivations, formula sheets and reaction charts every day. If you are also preparing for KEAM or NEET, keep one timed entrance test a week.
Frequently Asked Questions
How many marks is the Plus Two Physics exam in Kerala?
Physics and Chemistry have a 60-mark written paper. The other 40 marks come from the practical exam and continuous evaluation (CE) together, so each subject is out of 100.
What is the pass mark for Plus Two Physics and Chemistry?
You need at least 30% in the written paper alone, which is 18 of 60, as well as the overall minimum grade. Practical and CE marks cannot make up for a written paper below 30%.
How can I score A+ in Plus Two Physics?
Practise every derivation with its diagram, solve the NCERT exercises with units in every answer, draw neat labelled diagrams and graphs, and solve previous papers under time. Secure the practical and CE marks with a complete record book and good viva preparation.
How do I study Plus Two organic chemistry?
Learn name reactions and conversions as chains, practise IUPAC naming and mechanisms from the textbook, write every equation with its conditions and revise your reaction chart every day before the exam.
