After SSLC: Polytechnic Diploma, VHSE and ITI — Options Besides Plus One
Most Kerala students go to Plus One after SSLC, but it is not the only good path. A polytechnic diploma, Vocational Higher Secondary (VHSE) or an ITI course can lead to skilled jobs early and still keep higher studies open.
This guide explains each option and how admission works, so you can compare them with Plus One. Dates and rules change every year, so always follow the official prospectus.
Polytechnic diploma (engineering and technology)
- A three-year diploma in branches such as civil, mechanical, electrical, electronics and computer engineering, at government, aided and self-financing polytechnics.
- Students who have passed SSLC, THSLC, CBSE Class 10 or an equivalent can apply on polyadmission.org. Admission is based on Class 10 marks, with no entrance test, through a rank list and allotment rounds (in 2026, the rank list came out in late June).
- After a diploma you can work as a technician or supervisor, or join an engineering degree through lateral entry into the second year of B.Tech.
VHSE — Vocational Higher Secondary
- VHSE is a two-year higher secondary course that combines regular subjects with a vocational skill course under the National Skills Qualifications Framework (NSQF).
- Admission is through a single-window process on vhscap.kerala.gov.in, much like HSCAP for Plus One; in 2026 it began on 25 May, followed by trial and main allotments.
- You finish with a higher secondary qualification plus a skill certificate, so you can study further or start work.
ITI — Industrial Training Institutes
- ITIs offer short, practical trade courses (usually one or two years) such as electrician, fitter, plumber, welder or mechanic trades.
- They suit students who want hands-on work quickly. Admission to government ITIs is done online on itiadmissions.kerala.gov.in, usually in June (in 2026, applications ran from about 8 to 30 June), and selection is by an index based on SSLC marks. Check the official notice for each year’s dates and rules.
How to choose
- Plus One if you want a degree, professional course or entrance exam (engineering, medicine, law, commerce) after school.
- Polytechnic if you like practical engineering and want a technical job sooner, with the option of B.Tech later.
- VHSE if you want higher secondary plus a job skill together.
- ITI if you want a trade and early work.
- Talk to students and teachers in each path, and visit an institute before choosing. See also our guide to choosing a Plus One stream.
