CBSE Class 12 Physics, Chemistry and Maths — Unit-wise Marks for 2026-27 and How to Use Them
Knowing how many marks each unit carries helps CBSE Class 12 students plan revision: you can give the most time to the heaviest units without skipping any chapter.
This guide gives the unit-wise marks for Physics, Chemistry and Mathematics from the official CBSE curriculum for 2026-27, and how to use them. Always check cbseacademic.nic.in for any changes.
Physics (theory 70 marks, 3 hours)
- Electrostatics + Current Electricity: 16 marks.
- Magnetic Effects of Current and Magnetism + Electromagnetic Induction and Alternating Currents: 17 marks.
- Electromagnetic Waves + Optics: 18 marks.
- Dual Nature of Radiation and Matter + Atoms and Nuclei: 12 marks.
- Electronic Devices (Semiconductor Electronics): 7 marks.
- The remaining 30 marks are for practicals.
Chemistry (theory 70 marks, 3 hours)
- Solutions 7 · Electrochemistry 9 · Chemical Kinetics 7 · d- and f-Block Elements 7 · Coordination Compounds 7.
- Haloalkanes and Haloarenes 6 · Alcohols, Phenols and Ethers 6 · Aldehydes, Ketones and Carboxylic Acids 8 · Amines 6 · Biomolecules 7.
- Organic chemistry (the last five chapters) adds up to 33 of the 70 marks. The remaining 30 marks are for practicals.
Mathematics (80 marks + 20 internal assessment)
- Relations and Functions 8 · Algebra 10 · Calculus 35 · Vectors and Three-Dimensional Geometry 14 · Linear Programming 5 · Probability 8.
- Calculus alone is 35 of the 80 marks, nearly half the paper.
- CBSE notes there is no chapter-wise weightage within units in the question paper design, so cover every chapter.
How to use the weightage
- Spend time roughly in proportion to the marks, but never skip a chapter; short and case-based questions can come from anywhere.
- Physics: optics and the electricity-magnetism units are the heaviest; keep a derivation list and practise numericals there daily.
- Chemistry: organic chemistry is a third of the paper; make reaction charts. Electrochemistry is the single heaviest chapter.
- Maths: calculus deserves the most practice (differentiation, integration, applications and differential equations).
- Solve the CBSE sample papers and marking schemes under time; see our CBSE Class 12 board exam guide.
Frequently Asked Questions
What is the unit-wise weightage for CBSE Class 12 Physics 2026-27?
In the official 2026-27 syllabus (theory 70 marks): Electrostatics and Current Electricity 16; Magnetic Effects of Current and Magnetism, EMI and AC 17; Electromagnetic Waves and Optics 18; Dual Nature of Radiation and Matter, Atoms and Nuclei 12; Electronic Devices 7.
What is the chapter-wise weightage for CBSE Class 12 Chemistry?
For 2026-27 (theory 70 marks): Solutions 7, Electrochemistry 9, Chemical Kinetics 7, d- and f-Block Elements 7, Coordination Compounds 7, Haloalkanes and Haloarenes 6, Alcohols, Phenols and Ethers 6, Aldehydes, Ketones and Carboxylic Acids 8, Amines 6, Biomolecules 7.
Which unit carries the most marks in CBSE Class 12 Maths?
Calculus, with 35 of the 80 marks in the 2026-27 syllabus. The others are Relations and Functions 8, Algebra 10, Vectors and 3D Geometry 14, Linear Programming 5 and Probability 8, plus 20 internal marks.
Can I skip low-weightage chapters?
No. CBSE says there is no chapter-wise weightage within units in the question paper design, so questions can come from any chapter. Use the weightage to plan time, not to skip topics.
