Becoming a School Teacher in Kerala After Plus Two — D.El.Ed (TTC) Explained
If you want to teach young children, Kerala has a teacher-training route that starts right after Plus Two: the D.El.Ed (Diploma in Elementary Education), still often called TTC. It prepares teachers for lower primary and upper primary classes.
This guide explains the course, eligibility and how admission usually works. Rules and dates are announced each year in the official notification, so always check it before applying.
What the course is
- D.El.Ed is a two-year course in four semesters, combining theory with practical training and an internship in schools.
- It prepares students to teach in primary and upper primary schools (roughly Classes 1 to 7).
- Courses are run by District Institutes of Education and Training (DIETs) and other recognised teacher-training institutes.
Eligibility
- At least 50% marks in Plus Two from the Kerala Higher Secondary Board, or an equivalent qualification approved by the Government of Kerala.
- Age: 17 to 33 years as on 1 July of the admission year, as stated by DIET Thrissur, with relaxations for eligible categories as per the notification.
- Subject and stream rules (for example, separate seats by stream) are given in each year’s notification; read it carefully.
How admission usually works
- The notification is issued by the education department, and applications are handled through the Deputy Director of Education offices in each district.
- Selection is generally on merit, based on Plus Two marks, rather than an entrance test, according to admission guides; confirm the method in the notification for your year.
- Apply only to recognised institutes, and keep your Plus Two mark list, SSLC certificate and any reservation certificates ready.
After D.El.Ed
- To be appointed as a teacher you usually also need to clear a teacher eligibility test for the level you want to teach, such as Kerala’s KTET; check the current requirements. See our KTET guide.
- You can continue studying: a degree followed by a B.Ed opens high-school teaching; see our courses after Humanities guide.
- Teaching skills from D.El.Ed are also valued in tuition centres and online teaching.
