Kerala’s Four-Year Degree (FYUGP) — What Plus Two Students Should Know

Since 2024-25, Kerala’s universities have moved their undergraduate (BA, B.Sc, B.Com and similar) courses to a four-year undergraduate programme, usually called FYUGP. If you are in Plus Two and planning a degree in a Kerala college, this changes how you plan.

This guide explains the structure, the exit option and how admission works, based on the current university rules. Details differ slightly between universities, so read your university’s prospectus.

How FYUGP is structured

  • Degrees are organised as four years of study in credits, with a major subject plus minor and other courses.
  • There are three pathways: a three-year UG degree, a four-year UG degree (Honours), and a four-year UG degree (Honours with Research), which includes a research project or dissertation.
  • You choose your major when you join, with some flexibility to change or add minors as you go, depending on the university’s rules.

The exit after three years

  • Kerala’s universities allow one exit, after three years, with a three-year UG degree once you complete the required credits (for example, 133 credits in Calicut University’s rules).
  • This is different from the national framework, which allows exits after one or two years as well; Kerala chose a single exit.
  • If you stay for the fourth year, you get an Honours degree, or Honours with Research, which can help for research, some postgraduate admissions and some jobs.

How admission works

  • Each university runs its own online admission for its affiliated colleges, based mainly on Plus Two marks. For example, the University of Kerala publishes its FYUGP prospectus on admissions.keralauniversity.ac.in.
  • Registration usually opens soon after the Plus Two results (in 2026, around late May to mid-June), followed by rank lists and allotments.
  • Central universities, including the Central University of Kerala, use CUET-UG instead; see our CUET guide.

Planning tips for Plus Two students

  • Your Plus Two marks decide your rank for degree admission in Kerala, so they matter even if you are not writing an entrance exam.
  • Think about your major early: choose a subject you enjoy and that fits your plans (for example, a science major for research, Commerce for CA or banking).
  • Decide later whether to take the fourth year; the three-year exit keeps the old degree route open.
  • See our guides on courses after Commerce and courses after Humanities.
