Plus Two Biology — Botany and Zoology Tips to Score A+

Plus Two Biology is one paper with two parts, Botany and Zoology, and it is the most textbook-based of the science subjects. That is good news: careful reading, neat diagrams and the exact terms from the textbook are enough for an A+, and the same preparation is the base for NEET.

This guide explains how the paper is set and how to prepare both parts.

How the Biology paper is set

  • The written paper has 60 marks in two parts: Botany (30 marks) and Zoology (30 marks). The other 40 marks come from the practical exam and continuous evaluation (CE) together.
  • Questions are mostly short: one-mark, two-mark and three-mark questions, including diagram-based ones. In 2026 the Biology paper was on 24 March.
  • You need at least 30% of the written paper as well as the overall minimum to pass, so prepare both parts fully.
  • Kerala uses the NCERT Biology textbook for Plus Two, so read it line by line.

Botany

  • Topics such as plant reproduction, genetics, molecular basis of inheritance, biotechnology and ecology need clear concepts and correct terms.
  • For genetics, practise crosses and ratios step by step until they are automatic.
  • For processes (such as DNA replication, transcription and the steps of a biotechnology technique), learn them as numbered steps or flowcharts.

Zoology

  • Human reproduction, reproductive health, evolution, human health and disease, and the applications of biology are common areas.
  • Learn labelled diagrams (for example, of reproductive systems and structures in the textbook) until you can draw them from memory.
  • Make tables for diseases (cause, symptoms, prevention) and for comparisons; they are quick to revise and to write in the exam.

Answer-writing tips

  • Use the exact terms from the textbook and spell them correctly; Biology answers are marked on key words.
  • Draw diagrams in pencil with clear labels; a correct diagram often carries marks of its own.
  • Write two- and three-mark answers as short points, one idea per mark.
  • Divide your time between the two parts so that neither Botany nor Zoology is rushed.

Practicals, NEET and a revision plan

  • Practicals: keep your record and specimen notes complete, and learn the identification points for each specimen or slide.
  • NEET: the same NCERT chapters are the core of NEET Biology, so board preparation done line by line pays twice. Add timed NEET-style questions on each chapter.
  • Now to December: finish chapters with diagram and term lists. January–February: practicals, model exam and previous papers under time. The last weeks: diagrams, tables and key terms every day.

Frequently Asked Questions

How many marks is the Plus Two Biology exam in Kerala?

The written paper has 60 marks: 30 for Botany and 30 for Zoology. The other 40 marks come from the practical exam and continuous evaluation (CE) together, so Biology is out of 100.

How can I score A+ in Plus Two Biology?

Read the NCERT textbook line by line, learn the exact terms, practise labelled diagrams until you can draw them from memory, make tables for comparisons and diseases, and solve previous papers under time. Secure the practical and CE marks too.

Is Plus Two Biology enough for NEET?

The Plus Two (and Plus One) NCERT Biology chapters are the core of NEET Biology, so careful board preparation is a strong base. For NEET you also need timed practice with multiple-choice questions and revision of both years.

How should I divide time between Botany and Zoology in the exam?

Each part carries 30 marks, so plan roughly equal time for both. Answer the questions you are sure of first in each part and leave a few minutes at the end to check labels and terms.
