Plus Two Computer Science — How to Prepare for Theory and Practicals

Plus Two Computer Science mixes programming, web technology and databases. It is a very scoring subject because most questions test clear concepts and short programs, and a big share of the marks comes from the practical exam.

This guide explains how the subject is assessed and how to prepare each part.

How Computer Science is assessed

  • The written paper has 60 marks, and 40 marks come from the practical exam and continuous evaluation (CE) together.
  • You need at least 30% in the written paper (18 of 60) as well as the overall minimum, so practical marks cannot carry a weak theory paper.
  • Questions range from one-word and short answers to programs and longer explanations. Use your SCERT textbook and the teacher’s notes as the main material.
  • Students in Commerce or Humanities who take Computer Applications can use the same approach; check that subject’s scheme with your school.

Programming (C++)

  • Learn the syntax of each topic (such as structures, pointers and object-oriented ideas like classes and objects) with one short example each.
  • Practise writing programs by hand, not only on the computer: in the exam you write them on paper, so small syntax errors cost marks.
  • For theory questions, define the concept, give one example and, where useful, a short code fragment.

Web technology and databases

  • HTML: learn the common tags and their attributes; practise writing a small page with lists, tables and forms.
  • JavaScript and PHP: learn basic syntax, simple programs and the difference between client-side and server-side scripting.
  • Databases and SQL: learn the key terms (keys, tables, relations) and practise SQL commands for creating tables, inserting, selecting with conditions, updating and deleting.
  • Make a one-page sheet of tags, commands and their uses for quick revision.

The practical exam

  • Practise every program in your record until you can write and run it without help, and keep the record book complete.
  • In the exam, write the program neatly on paper first if required, then type, run and test it with sample input.
  • Revise viva questions: definitions, the purpose of each program and common errors.

A revision plan until March

  • Now to December: one program a day by hand, and a tag/command sheet as you finish each chapter.
  • January–February: practicals and model exam; revise theory chapter by chapter and solve previous papers.
  • The last weeks: your sheets, record programs and previous-paper questions every day.
