Plus Two History and Political Science — How to Prepare and Score A+
History and Political Science are core Humanities subjects, and both reward the same skills: understanding events and ideas clearly, remembering key facts, and writing well-organised long answers. With the right method they are very scoring.
This guide explains how the papers are set and how to prepare each subject.
How the papers are set
- Both subjects have an 80-mark written paper and 20 marks from continuous evaluation (CE), so each is out of 100. In 2026 History was on 10 March and Political Science on 24 March.
- Questions range from very short and matching questions to short answers and long answers worth more marks.
- You need at least 30% in the written paper (24 of 80) as well as the minimum grade. Kerala uses the NCERT textbooks for both subjects.
History: learn it as connected stories
- For each chapter, learn causes → events → results. When you understand why something happened, the details are easier to remember.
- Make a one-page timeline per chapter with key dates, people and places, and revise these pages often.
- Learn the sources the textbook discusses (such as inscriptions, texts and archaeological finds) and what historians learn from them; source-based questions are common.
- Practise locating important sites on an outline map of India if your teacher includes map work.
Political Science: concepts with examples
- Learn each key concept with a one-line meaning and a real example (from India or the world), because questions often ask you to explain or apply an idea.
- Make comparison tables for ideas that are easy to confuse, and lists of features, causes and effects for each chapter.
- Keep up with major news on Indian politics and world affairs; it helps you give fresh examples.
Long-answer tips
- Plan for a minute: an opening line that answers the question, then points with short headings (one point per mark), then a one-line conclusion.
- Use the key terms from the textbook; examiners look for them.
- Watch the time: long answers can eat the clock, so give each question time in proportion to its marks.
A revision plan until March
- Now to December: timelines (History) and concept tables (Political Science) as you finish each chapter.
- Christmas exam: use it as practice and note weak chapters.
- January–February: revise one chapter a day, then solve previous Plus Two papers and the model exam under time.
- The last weeks: one-page notes and tables every day.
